For the Sauce & Patties:
- 4 hamburger patties 1/3 lb each
- ¼ cup barbecue sauce for basting
- 4 tbsp processed cheese spread e.g., Cheez Whiz
- 4 tbsp canned sliced mushrooms drained
- 1 pinch black pepper
For Assembly:
- 4 burger buns
- Mayonnaise
- 4 lettuce leaves
- 1 tomato sliced
- ½ onion thinly sliced
- Dill pickle slices
Make Sauce: In saucepan, combine cheese spread, mushrooms, and pepper. Heat on low, stirring, until melted and smooth. Set aside.
Cook Patties: Season patties. Cook on med high 3-4 mins per side. In last minute, brush both sides with BBQ sauce.
Toast Buns: Lightly toast cut sides of buns.
Assemble: Spread mayo on bottom bun. Layer lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles. Add patty. Spoon warm cheese sauce over patty. Top with bun.
- Sauce Tip: If sauce thickens, stir in 1 tsp milk over low heat.
- Fresh Mushrooms: Sauté 4 oz sliced fresh mushrooms in butter until golden; stir into cheese sauce.
- Rest Patties: Let cooked patties rest 2-3 mins before assembling.
