- 3 medium yellow onions peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1/4 cup dry white wine
- 12 ounces sour cream
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened
- 1 clove fresh garlic grated (optional)
- Fresh flat leaf parsley minced, to taste
- A few dashes of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce to taste
Peel the onions and slice them very thinly (a mandoline works great).
Heat butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onions, sprinkle with salt and sugar, and sauté for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Deglaze the pan by adding a splash of wine, letting it sizzle out. Repeat stirring and deglazing for about 30 minutes until onions are deeply golden and fragrant.
Transfer onions to a cutting board and chop coarsely (or snip them directly in the pan with kitchen scissors).
In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream and softened cream cheese until smooth.
Stir in caramelized onions, parsley, and optional garlic.
Taste and adjust seasoning. Add a splash of Worcestershire or soy sauce if desired.
Serve warm or chilled with chips, crackers, or veggies.
